Draw Something: 20 million downloads in 5 weeks!

A few weeks ago we announced the app: Draw Something. The app developed by OMGPOP’s, a company of Dan Porter, has 10 days after launch 1.2 million downloads and after 5 weeks the game has been downloaded 20million times! To compare, this are more users than popular apps like Foursquare (3-year-old) and Instagram (1.5-year-old) have. Draw Something is one of the fastest growing mobile apps of all time.

Porter used a little bit of paid marketing to promote the app at launch. He also advertised it on OMGPOP. Both initiatives resulted in the first 40.000 downloads. When the app hit 100.000 users, word of mouth marketing took over and downloads exploded.  Users attracted friends by posting pictures to Instagram and Twitter and downloads started pouring in. "It's user generated content people want to share," says Porter of the phenomenon.  "No one goes on Twitter and says, 'Look how many cows are on my farm.' But people are going on Twitter and saying, 'Look at this drawing, it's cracking me up.'"

Of the 20 million downloads, Porter says 12 million are active users. It is the number one app in 79 countries. Users have produced more than 1 billion drawings. On March 11, 3.000 Draw Something pictures were being made per second. Porter says part of the genius behind his app is that it requires two people to play.
